School Admission Age Criteria
Understand common age requirements for different classes, how cut-off dates work, and what to verify before applying.
School admission age criteria are among the first requirements parents should check before applying. Schools may have minimum or maximum age requirements for different classes, especially for pre-primary and Class 1 admissions.
There is no single age rule that applies to every school in India. The applicable age can depend on the state or Union Territory, school, board, academic session, entry class and local admission regulations.
For Grade 1, the Ministry of Education has advised States and Union Territories to align admission age with 6+ years in line with the National Education Policy 2020. Parents should still verify the exact cut-off date published by the target school.

These ranges are a general planning reference, not a universal admission rule. Always compare your child's date of birth with the official school notice.
Why does school admission age matter?
Age criteria help schools place students in a class that matches their developmental stage and learning expectations. Age is especially important for younger children. For older students, schools may give more weight to previous class completion, academic records, transfer documents, qualifying examinations, board requirements and seat availability.
What is the right age for Class 1?
Class 1 is usually the most important age-related admission stage. The Ministry of Education has advised States and Union Territories to align Grade 1 admission with 6+ years. This recommendation is connected with the NEP 2020 foundational-stage framework, which includes three years of preschool followed by Grades 1 and 2.
The exact cut-off can differ. A school may require a child to be six years old by 31 March, 1 April, 30 June or another date. Do not calculate eligibility only from the child's current age; compare the date of birth with the school's stated cut-off date.
How is age calculated?
Schools generally compare the child's date of birth with a specified cut-off date. For example, if a school requires a child to be six years old on or before 31 March, a child born on 15 March 2020 would have completed six years by 31 March 2026. A child born on 15 April 2020 would not have completed six years by that date.
Pre-primary age criteria
Playgroup, Nursery, LKG and UKG requirements vary significantly because schools can structure early-years programmes differently. Check the minimum age, maximum age, date-of-birth cut-off, progression to the next class, curriculum and whether an interaction or assessment is required.
Playgroup / Pre-Nursery
2-3 years
Nursery
3-4 years
LKG / Junior KG
4-5 years
UKG / Senior KG
5-6 years
Class 1 to Class 5 age criteria
Once children enter primary school, their expected age generally increases by about one year for each successive class. This is only a broad planning guide and can be affected by date of birth, previous class, state rules, school policy and transfers between boards or states.
Class 1

Class 2
7+ years
Class 3
8+ years
Class 4
9+ years
Class 5

Class 6 to Class 8 age criteria
Middle-school admissions usually follow normal academic progression, but age alone may not determine eligibility. Schools may request the previous report card, Transfer Certificate, proof of completion of the previous class and previous board details.
Class 6
11+ years
Class 7
12+ years
Class 8
13+ years
Class 9 to Class 12 admission
For Classes 9 and 10, a broad planning range is around 14 and 15 years respectively, but these figures should not be treated as universal CBSE age requirements. Academic records, board rules, transfer documents and local school requirements become increasingly important.
Class 11 admission is generally linked to passing Class 10 or an equivalent recognised examination, subject combinations and the school's own criteria. Students entering Class 12 are commonly around 17, but CBSE rules generally do not permit direct admission to Class 12 without completing and passing a regular Class 11 course.
Does CBSE have a fixed age limit?
Parents should not treat “CBSE age criteria” as one fixed rule for every class and school. CBSE's published information states that it does not prescribe one universal minimum or maximum age for admission and appearing in the Class X or XII examinations. The applicable rules can also include local authority requirements and the individual school's admission policy.
Age proof, transfers and special cases
A birth certificate is commonly used to establish date of birth. Depending on the school and circumstances, parents may also need previous report cards, a Transfer Certificate, proof of passing the previous class, student identity documents and previous board information.
If a child is slightly younger or older than the published range, check the school policy and applicable state or local rules before applying. Ask the admission office whether relaxation or another admission year is possible. Never alter or manipulate a child's date of birth to meet an admission requirement.
RTE admissions also have state-specific requirements. The Right to Education framework covers free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14 at the elementary level, but parents should rely on the official state notification for the relevant admission year.
How to check age eligibility
- Select the class for which your child is applying.
- Check the school's official age requirement.
- Find the cut-off date or published date-of-birth range.
- Compare the requirement with your child's birth certificate.
- Check the academic session, state rules and other eligibility conditions.
- Apply before the school's deadline if the requirements are met.

Common mistakes parents make
- Checking only the child's current age instead of age on the cut-off date.
- Assuming every school uses the same cut-off date.
- Assuming that every school follows one universal CBSE age rule.
- Ignoring the academic session or local regulations.
- Failing to check that the birth certificate and application form match.
