School Admission Timeline
Learn when to start searching, visiting schools, submitting applications and completing the admission process.
Choosing a school is easier when parents start early. Many families begin researching only when applications open, by which time popular schools may already have limited seats or fully booked campus visits.
A better plan is to work through the process in stages: research, shortlist, visit, check eligibility, apply, assessment or interaction, selection, documents, fee payment and admission confirmation.
Quick school admission timeline
When should parents start looking for a school?
Ideally, parents should begin researching 6 to 12 months before the expected admission date. Starting early gives families time to understand school options instead of making a rushed decision.
Early research is especially useful when parents are looking for boarding schools, residential schools, international programmes, schools in another city, schools with limited seats or schools with specialised sports or extracurricular facilities.
12 months before admission: start research
At this stage, focus on understanding needs instead of filling out forms. Build a list of priorities such as location, board, school type, fees, transport, safety and academic approach.
- Which boards are available in my area?
- Which schools are within a practical travel distance?
- Do I need a day school or boarding school?
- What is my approximate annual budget?
- Does the school offer the class my child needs?
9–10 months before admission: build your shortlist
Once priorities are clear, create a shortlist of 5–10 schools for initial research. Then narrow this down to 3–5 schools for a more detailed comparison based on the factors that matter most to your family.
4–7 months before admission: visit schools
A school website can explain a lot, but a campus visit reveals classroom culture, student behaviour, teacher interaction, safety arrangements and the overall atmosphere.
During the visit, ask about admission dates, application windows, entrance assessments, entry age, documentation and total annual costs.
2–4 months before admission: watch for applications
This is the stage when parents should become more active. Check each shortlisted school’s official admission page regularly and look for opening dates, deadlines, age criteria and required documents.
The safest approach is to apply as soon as the school officially opens applications, provided the child meets the eligibility requirements and all documents are ready.
After application: monitor communication
Submitting the application is not the end of the process. Keep checking email, SMS, WhatsApp updates or parent portals for assessment dates, document requests and final selection notices.
Selection stage: review the offer carefully
If your child is selected, read the admission communication carefully before paying any amount. Confirm the class offered, academic session, fee amount, payment deadline and required documents.
Documents, fees and admission confirmation
Once admission is confirmed, submit the required documents within the school’s stated deadline. Keep both digital and physical copies of all records and save every payment receipt.
Your admission is safest when you have written confirmation from the school and proof that fees were paid through the official payment process.
