Questions to Ask During School Admission
Know which questions to ask schools about academics, fees, facilities, transport, safety and student support before choosing a school.
Choosing a school is an important decision, and a school visit or admission discussion is the best opportunity to get clear answers before making it.
Websites and brochures can provide useful information, but parents often need practical details about academics, fees, safety, facilities, transport, student support and daily school life. Specific questions help you understand whether a school is suitable for your child and family.
Quick checklist: questions to ask a school
You do not need to ask every question. Focus on the areas that matter most to your child and family, and ask the same core questions when comparing schools.
1. Questions about admission
Start by understanding exactly how the admission process works, including availability, deadlines and what happens after an application is submitted.
2. Questions about eligibility
Confirm that your child meets the age, class, academic and transfer requirements before spending time on an application.
3. Questions about academics
Ask specific questions about curriculum, classroom teaching, assessments and how the school communicates academic progress.
4. Questions about teachers
Teachers have a major influence on a child's experience. If possible, also observe how teachers interact with students during your visit.
5. Questions about fees and payment
Do not ask only for the tuition fee. Request the complete cost of attending the school and ask for the applicable fee structure in writing.
6. Questions about safety and child protection
The goal is not only to know whether a policy exists, but to understand how the school responds when a safety or wellbeing concern occurs.
7. Questions about facilities and activities
Ask which facilities students can actually use and how frequently they are part of the school programme.
8. Questions about sports and extracurricular activities
9. Questions about student support
Every child learns differently. Ask how the school provides academic, emotional and learning support when a student needs it.
10. Questions about transport
For younger children, ask how the school ensures that the correct child is handed over at the correct location.
11. Questions about timings and daily life
12. Questions about boarding or hostel facilities
If you are considering a residential school, visit the hostel facilities and ask about supervision, food, medical care, communication and adjustment support.
13. Questions about food and dining
14. Questions about parent communication
Questions for your child
Parents should not be the only ones asking questions. When possible, involve your child in the visit and ask:
- What do you think about the campus?
- Which facility did you like?
- Did you feel comfortable?
- What do you think about the classrooms?
- Are there activities you would like to try?
- What questions do you have?
Questions to ask before paying the admission fee
Never feel pressured to make a payment without understanding the terms, total cost and cancellation or withdrawal policy.
How to compare two schools
Ask both schools the same core questions and record the answers side by side. This makes the decision more objective than relying on reputation or a brochure.
Red flags parents should watch for
Asking questions is also a way to identify concerns. Be cautious if:
- The school is unwilling to explain important fees.
- Basic admission information is unclear or staff give inconsistent answers.
- Parents cannot understand the refund or withdrawal policy.
- Important facilities cannot be shown or explained.
- Safety procedures or communication channels are unclear.
- You feel pressured to pay immediately without understanding the terms.
How to get better answers
Specific questions usually produce more useful answers. Instead of asking “Does the school have sports?”, ask which sports are available, how frequently students participate and whether professional coaches are available.
Instead of asking “Is the school safe?”, ask what systems are used for campus entry, student pickup, visitor management and emergencies. Instead of asking “How much are the fees?”, ask for the total annual cost including compulsory charges and services.
FAQs
What are the most important questions to ask during a school visit?
Start with admission eligibility, the complete fee structure, class size, teaching approach, safety procedures, facilities, transport, student support and parent communication. Focus on the areas that matter most to your child and family.
What should I ask about school fees before admission?
Ask for the total annual cost, including tuition, admission, annual, transport, books, uniform, meals, activities and other compulsory charges. Also confirm payment deadlines, late fees, refunds and cancellation terms in writing.
What questions should I ask about school safety?
Ask about entry and exit control, visitor management, student pickup, CCTV, supervision, emergency procedures, first aid, bullying prevention and how parents can report concerns.
How can I compare two schools fairly?
Ask both schools the same questions and record board, total cost, class size, student-teacher ratio, timings, transport, sports, activities, safety, student support, distance and communication policies side by side.
Should my child take part in the school visit?
Yes, when practical. Ask what your child thinks about the campus, classrooms and activities, and whether they felt comfortable. Older children should have a meaningful role in the final decision.
Choose with better information
The right school is not necessarily the one with the longest list of facilities or the most attractive brochure. It is the school that best matches your child's needs, your family's priorities and your long-term expectations.
